WHAT WE DO IN THE OVERHAUL PROCESS.

1.   Before we can properly inspect your clock movement we must thoroughly clean it.
2.   Your clock movement is disassembled and cleaned in our ultrasonic cleaner which removes all old crusted lubricants from the pivots and pivot holes.
3.   Identify all worn pivot holes in the clock plates.
4.   Check all pivots for abnormal wear.
5.   Polish wear marks from verge. This occurs when the escape wheel teeth hit the entry and exit pallet faces over many years.
6.   Polish pivots perfectly round and parallel again using our high speed carbide pivot polish machine
7.   Install new bushing in pivot holes where excessive wear was identified.
8.   Release mainsprings and check for being "set" (mainspring lost its ability to uncoil)
9.   If mainspring is still usable, clean and lightly oil otherwise replace the mainspring with the proper thickness, width and length spring for the movement
10.  Assemble all components together
11.  Check for any potential binding problems by running the movement for 1 day without any lubricant
12,  Oil movement and regulate for proper time.

ALTHOUGH RARE, THE OVERHAUL CHARE COULD BE MORE IF SOMEONE WITHOUT THE PROPER SKILLS ATTEMPTED TO REPAIR THE MOVEMENT AND DAMAGED PARTS BEYOND REPAIR.

WHY DOES IT COST SO MUCH TO REPAIR MY CLOCK?

Well, anything mechanical does wear out over time and a clock movement is no different. Throughout the life of your clock it probably has been repaired/overhauled many times. Up until the 1950's or so clockmakers actual knew how to properly repair a clock movement but guess what, things have changed. Today for many it's a hobby for the tinker and novice alike. These amatues lack the skills and equipment necessary to properly overhaul a movement. There feeble attempts only add to the time and materials needed to successfully put your clock back in running order
. Just a word of friendly advice If your clock stops take it to a professional for a evaluation to determine why it's not running and what's needed to put it back in working order.

Look below at the various steps we take where overhauling a clock movement and watch the short video we made of restoration of a 8 day Seth Thomas mantel clock movement

We repair antique Clocks manufactured by Seth Thomas, Ansonia, Ingraham, Gilbert,New Haven, Welch and others

If your Grandfather or Grandmother clock is not running properly or it stopped chiming give us a call to schedule a appointment for a house call.
We will come out to our house and do the following.
1. Determine if there is really a problem with the clock or a simple matter of setting the clock back in beat. Sometimes it can get out of beat if you stop the pendulum and start it swinging or by adjusting the regulating nut on the bottom of the pendulum bob.
2. If the clock is in beat and it still keeps time but the chimes stopped working (left and right weight will stay up and the middle weight will come down) we will have to remove the hands, front wood surround and dial to gain access to the movement for inspection.
3. We then remove the movement from the case to inspect it for wear on the pivot holes.
This is normally why the clock stopped chiming or stopped keeping time altogether.
4. If the movement shows excessive wear we show you the affected areas that caused your clock from not functioning as it should.
5. If you need a movement replacement we then give you a firm price to replace the movement. The price includes the initial housecall, ordering the new movement, testing the new movement for one week at our shop then installing it back into your Grandfather or Grandmother clock at your convience. When we test your new movement we need to take your weights, pendulum and old movement. The old movement will be returned to you if requested.
6. All movements come with a two year warranty.

The replacement cost for a new Grandfather or Grandmother clock movement depends on these three key factors:

1. Single Westminster Chime or a Triple chime movement.
2. Cable or Chain wind
3. Manufacturer of the movement

Although it's impossible to give a exact replacement cost without a houscall visit we can give you some idea what costs are involved
Grandmother clock chain & cable     ----------    $ 485.00 - $575.00
Grandfather Westminster & Triple Chime -------  $ 575.00 - $700.00
