Where to begin?....Well lets start by saying the AVERAGE 8 day American clock movement is around 100 years old. During the life span of your clock movement it probably has been worked on a few times by well meaning folks such as your "uncle Joe". It seems many people I have run across during my many years in the restoration of clocks always had someone in the family that repaired clocks for a hobby and probably did more damage than good in the repair attempt.  I have run across and seen almost everything in shoddy workmanship throughout the years some even completed by professionals that obviously took shortcuts to save time. 

Properly overhauling a clock movement takes years of experience to acquire along with the willingness and desire to produce the highest quality overhauled clock movement available today. A properly overhauled American 8 day movement will run after regulation a week plus and be within 1 minute of the correct time after the 7th day.
There are no shortcuts when properly overhauling a clock movement.  It takes time, parts and the proper equipment such as a pivot polisher, bushing cutting tools and a precision lathe to bring that old worn movement back to life. So please don't be penny wise and dollar foolish when it comes to your family heirloom,
